Derek and his good friend Logan in their school performance of “Turkey Dinner”…
Red Group -- Thanksgiving 2011
We just got back from Oahu and we all had a blast. The big news is that Derek went into the ocean each day WILLINGLY. He also start to say that his favorite beach is Waikiki. We tested out several other beaches while we were there, but the beach outside of the Marriott was Derek’s favorite because it had a mad-made wall to help break up the waves.
We enjoyed alot of things while we were there but here are some of our favorites:
1. Waikiki Beach (just outside the Marriott b/c there is a wall to break up the waves)
2. 2011 Aloha Festivals Waikiki Ho’olaule’a – a street fair held on Sept 17 that happened to be right outside of our hotel. Yummy food and great entertainment. Our first taste of Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck (Good-but overrated)
3. Pearl Harbor – Trying to explain the pictures to Derek was a challenge. He knows that something bad happened there a long time ago and he went to say thank you to those people who “fixed it” — smart kid if I do say so myself!
4. Laniakea Shore / Turtle Beach – I got to venture off by myself for a quick few minutes and the turtles came right up to my legs. They were playing in the surf
5. Diamond Head Crater – Tim did it with Derek on his back (kid backpack). It WAS a challenge ducking and climbing stairs with 27lbs extra on your back.
6. Marriott Crab and Prime Rib Buffett – Surprisingly yummy! Derek ate for free and helped Mommy “get my $$ worth”
7. Hula Grill Waikiki – In the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel. Yummy ahi poke tacos and coconut shrimp!
Those are my thoughts for now. Pictures to come shortly.
Yesterday, we landed in the emergency room because Derek swallowed a marble while singing himself to sleep. We kept hearing “uh oh, uh oh, uh oh” so we went to investigate. Daddy tried to do the himlech (sp?) manover and Mommy tried to stick my fingers down his throat but no luck. It has already gone down the tube (thank goodness it didn’t get stuck).
While in the hospital, Derek was super excited. He was both hyper and nervous at the same time. He had a great time and didn’t even want to take off the hospital bracelet at school today.
Alls well that ends well. Hopefully, he learned his lesson.
On a brighter note, Derek invited his first real friend over on Sun. All the other friends have been family friends. This one was the first time that Derek asked to invite someone over from school where we didn’t know the family. We all had a great time getting to know each other.
Now onto his first birthday invite from a friend from school.
At 1am last night Derek decided he had enough of sleeping
and since Mommy wasn’t coming in his room to meet his demands, he
decided to climb out of his crib and go find Mommy (or Daddy).
Daddy explained that it was the middle of the night and he needed
to sleep. That didn’t stop little Derek from attempting many many
more times. But finally- he went to sleep UNTIL morning when he
suddenly appeared in our room. Time to get out the toddler railing
and convert to a toddler bed.

Last weekend was my cousin’s wedding. Derek had a blast in the dance floor. Where did he get this love of dancing -- certainly not from his Mommy or Daddy who rarely venture out on the dance floor.
Check these videos out with Grandma and Grandpa.
Yesterday, Derek tells me…”Mommy’ there’s something in my nose. I look over and there’s a brown stick coming out of his nose. I assume it’s just a remnant of a bloody nose. But no, when I try to pull it out, a WHOLE acorn comes along with it!
Derek proudly announces that his “friend” (let’s just call him M) at school told him to put it there.
He didn’t even complain until the next day.
It’s the first time that I’ve thought “If you’re friends told you to jump off a bridge, would you?”
Officially sounding like a Mommy now…
This week Derek has 2 official days with no accidents at school. We are so proud!
This weekend we had no accidents! Yes, that’s right – none. So Derek marched to school proudly in his big boy underwear today. I can’t wait to see how it turned out.
The difference? Each time Derek goes pee pee, we make a big deal of it, hold hands (like ring around the rosy) and do the potty dance (jump up and down and sing) – all three of us. He loves it and told Daddy to teach Miss Amy (one of his teachers at school) how to do it.
